About me
Hello and welcome to my website, my name is Colleen Keeley and I am currently the Visual Arts Teacher at Northwood School, in Northwood, NH. I grew up in Feeding Hills, Massachusetts, and graduated from Agawam High School in 2011. I have always been passionate about art and decided I should pursue that passion as I grew up and turn it into a career where I can teach others. I chose to attend Springfield College in 2011 as my next step in life to help me pursue my passion. While at Springfield College I majored in Art Education and Art Therapy, and played on the women's lacrosse team. Springfield College's Humanics philosophy of the education of the whole person - in spirit, mind, and body - for leadership in service to others, has helped me develop not only as a teacher but as a person. I graduated in 2015 with my Bachelors of Science in Art and education and then continued on my education there where I earned my Masters in Education!
Teaching Philosophy
Growing up art was the only thing that got me through school, it helped me focus and see things in a different way. I never realized how much art was apart of our daily lives until I started learning the history of art in college. Art is everywhere, in products, clothing, advertising, movies, just about everything in life has art incorporated into it. That alone made my passion for art become that much stronger. I have always strived to be very unique in life, I never wanted to be the same as anyone else and art really helped me become a creative person not only in art but also in life. By knowing the basic fundamentals of art and allowing art education to further a student’s knowledge of art can help them develop not only as an artist but also as a student.
Schools can be very stressful growing up and very structured, as a teacher I will give my students artistic freedom and create a calm judgment free environment where they can express themselves as a student artist. Growing up in the 21st century I understand the importance of technology and will incorporate it in my classroom.
Students in my classroom will learn a multitude of artists, mediums, techniques, and the fundamentals. I am a huge believer in knowing the elements and principals of design, I believe they are the building blocks to art and once you know, recognize and incorporate them in art, then you can do anything in art.
I believe that everything you learn in school has its own purpose, and can help prepare you for life. But being passionate for art I feel that having art and a great understanding for art can push you ahead of the rest. With the skills you develop in art it allows you to see things differently, think creatively, and problem solve. And as an educator I will help develop and instill those skills into my students.
